When the passion for books supports social action

From August 28 to September 1, 2025, the Lions Club Mameranus organized its traditional Bichermaart at the Belle Étoile shopping center in Bertrange, as part of the Luxembourg City street market.
Created in 1991, this second-hand book market has become an unmissable cultural event over the years, attracting both book lovers and collectors of Luxemburgensia, rare works devoted to the country's history and culture.
Once again this year, an impressive assortment of books was on offer: novels, practical guides, comic books, and children's literature in French, German, and English. All of the books come from private donations or estates and are carefully collected and sorted by club volunteers to ensure that only the best quality copies are selected.
The Bichermaart is not just a literary event: above all, it is a solidarity initiative. All proceeds go to the Lions Club Mameranus social fund, which has already supported nearly 200 projects in a variety of fields: education, youth, assistance for people with disabilities, support for the elderly, medical research, and even the Telethon.
The 2025 edition raised a record €33,500, confirming the success of an initiative that has been combining culture and mutual aid for more than three decades.
This success is part of a broader commitment. The Lions Club Mameranus, which recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, took the opportunity to reiterate the significance of its global motto: “We serve.”
The figures are impressive: in 35 years, the club has distributed more than €1 million – equivalent to more than 40 million old Luxembourg francs – to charities and people in need. This result has been made possible by membership fees and, above all, by the repeated success of the Bichermaart, now an annual event at the Belle Étoile during the Schueberfouer fair.
