Luxembourg. To mark World Sight Day, Lions International Luxembourg has relaunched its campaign to raise awareness of corneal donation by deceased persons, in response to the growing demand for corneas for transplantation in specialized hospitals. A corneal donation is an act of human solidarity to restore sight to a patient whose sight is impaired and who can be cured by a corneal transplant.
For many years, Luxembourg Lions have been supporting the “Lions Hornhautbank Homburg/Saar”, where corneas collected by teams from the four major hospital groups in Luxembourg, the Centre Hospitalier du Luxembourg, the Robert Schuman Hospitals (Kirchberg), Center Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch (Esch-sur-Alzette) and Centre Hospitalier du Nord (Ettelbruck) are transported, evaluated, stored in an incubator and made available to specialist surgeons for operations to preserve and restore vision.
From 2012 to 2023, 1,026 corneas were donated in Luxembourg, and 390 Luxembourg patients were successfully transplanted at the Hombourg ophthalmology clinic, a reason for thoughts of thanks to all cornea donors, collectors and transplanters, a well-deserved tribute to all these “Sight Savers”.
An information stand at the HRS in Kirchberg on corneal donation, organized in partnership with the specialist ophthalmology department and the Lions Hornhautbank of the Hombourg/Saarland University Clinic, enabled the Lions SightFirst team to present the new joint leaflets “Corneal donation in Luxembourg” in three languages (FR, DE and EN), as well as a flyer on the Lions Hornhautbank, available at www.lions.lu.
